Overhead Gantry Crane Design and Installation Project

WH Scott has recently designed, manufactured, installed, tested, and certified a new crane and gantry in an engineering workshop in Bristol.

The customer required a clear workshop floor to maximise their working area, so a free-standing gantry with legs wasn’t a viable option. Instead, installing the gantry mounted off of stools that are fitted to the building columns was the best solution for all.

To ensure the existing building could support the proposed gantry and crane, WH Scott enlisted third-party civil structural engineers to complete a structural analysis of the building.
The result of this survey recommended the addition of two diagonal bracings between the building columns, and tiebacks between the building columns and the gantry beams.
The 14m gantry, 6 column-mounted stools, and diagonal bracings were all fabricated and installed by WH Scott with the Akapp-Stemmann Click-Ductor conductor bar support on one side of the gantry.

A 1t SWF Krantechnik GmbH single girder overhead gantry crane with a span of 10.7m and a height of lift of 5.6m was then manufactured, installed, and tested. A Blackline SWF crane kit was used to assemble the crane, and the hoist power and control were supplied by an energy chain, a solution that is perfect for compact cranes in tight spaces.
