Watergate Theatre

The Background

Based in the heart of Kilkenny, Ireland, Watergate Theatre & Music Venue has been entertaining audiences with local, national and international productions for over 25 years. In anticipation of their latest production, Peter Pan, the theatre required a bespoke onstage flying system to lift the actors and help them soar through the air above the stage.

The Project

Beginning in July 2018, WH Scott & Son worked closed with the Watergate Theatre team to design a bespoke flying system. Utilising our in-house design and fabrication division, Hiltonne Engineering, WHS designed a pilewind winch system complete with controls and all site fabrication/installation works.

A pilewind winch is a staple piece of machinery used in theatres and venues across the world. A multipurpose winch unit, designed to provide a basic electric hoisting system for use with suspension bars and trussing applications, these units are a good solution for educational establishments, places of worship, studio spaces and smaller theatrical venues.

Once developed, the WHS team installed, load tested and commissioned the winch to ensure safe and correct operation. Completed in September 2019, on time and to budget, the Watergate Theatre team also received training on operating the machinery, which has become a much-used and welcome addition to the venue.
