WH Scott
Kier Group MoD Lyneham Crane Installation
Design and delivery of high-capacity overhead cranes within a live Ministry of Defence facility.
Project Snapshot
Client: Kier Group
Location: MoD Lyneham, UK
Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge
Kier Group required a high-capacity lifting solution for their operations at MoD Lyneham, involving the installation of two 10-tonne overhead travelling cranes within an existing hangar. The project demanded cranes capable of handling significant loads while integrating into an ageing structure originally built in the 1950s.
The working environment presented additional complexity, as the site remained fully operational throughout the project. Strict safety protocols, access restrictions, and time-sensitive working windows had to be adhered to at all times. Ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing activities while maintaining compliance with defence site regulations was critical.
Furthermore, the structural integrity of the existing hangar needed to be verified before installation could proceed, requiring detailed surveys and analysis to confirm suitability for the new crane system.
The Solution
WH Scott was appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver a full turnkey solution, including design, specification, manufacture, installation, testing, and certification of the crane system. Comprehensive structural surveys were conducted, including ground investigations and flooring sample analysis, to ensure the building could safely support the proposed installation.
A detailed site survey of the supporting steelwork was also carried out to enable the design of bespoke structures tailored to the existing hangar. Following this, WH Scott’s technical team developed a full lift plan and Risk Assessment Method Statements (RAMS) to ensure safe execution throughout all phases of the project.
The cranes and supporting steelwork were assembled on site in accordance with the approved plans. Once installed, both 10t cranes were erected, fully tested, and commissioned to meet all operational and safety requirements.
The Outcome
Key Results:
- Installation of 2 × 10-tonne overhead travelling cranes within an existing hangar
- Project delivered on time and within budget in a live defence environment
- Achieved 100% safety performance with no lost time incidents
Additional Notes:
The project strengthened WH Scott’s ongoing relationship with Kier Group, demonstrating capability in delivering complex lifting solutions within highly regulated environments.
