WH SCOTT
Solaris Nexum Art Installation Lifting Project
[Doc › HERO SECTION › one-line summary]
Project Snapshot
Client: Grangegorman Development Agency / TU Dublin
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge
The Solaris Nexum installation presented a unique lifting challenge due to its complex design and suspended configuration. The artwork, composed of multiple components, needed to be safely assembled and installed at height using existing ceiling anchor points.
A critical requirement was to verify the integrity and load-bearing capacity of these anchor points before any lifting could take place. Failure to do so would pose significant safety risks during installation. Additionally, restricted site access prevented the use of conventional lifting platforms such as scissor lifts, requiring an alternative method for working at height.
The project also required careful coordination, as the artwork had to be assembled progressively during the lifting process, involving both engineers and the artist in a controlled and safe environment.
The Solution
WH Scott carried out comprehensive load testing of all three anchor points using 1,000kg counterbalance weights. A range of certified lifting equipment, including web slings, master rings, shackles, and wire rope pulling machines, was used to ensure accurate and safe testing.
incorporating a three-sheave block system connected to wire rope pulling machines. These were attached to the artwork using clevis head components and load pins, allowing controlled and precise lifting.
As the installation required assembly during lifting, WH Scott provided on-site training to the artist in the safe use of wire rope pulling machines. All lifting operations were closely supervised to ensure compliance with safety standards and correct installation procedures.
The Outcome
Key Results:
- Successful load testing of 3 anchor points using 1,000kg test weights
- Safe installation of a complex, multi-part suspended artwork using rope access methods
- Fully assembled and securely installed structure at TU Dublin
Additional Notes:
The project demonstrated WH Scott’s ability to deliver precise lifting solutions in challenging environments, combining engineering expertise with specialist access techniques.
