SUEZ Victoria Road Waste Transfer Site

Installation of fully automated waste handling cranes to increase efficiency, safety, and throughput at a major London facility.

Project Snapshot

Client: SUEZ Victoria Road Waste Transfer Site

Location: London, UK

Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge

SUEZ required a full upgrade of its waste handling operations at the Victoria Road site, replacing two ageing 7.5t manually operated cranes installed in 1978. The facility processes approximately 140,000 tonnes of household waste annually, making operational continuity critical throughout the project.

The key challenge was to modernize the crane system without significantly disrupting ongoing waste transfer operations. The site’s constraints—including proximity to an RAF airfield and active railway lines—added further complexity to installation logistics. Tight shutdown windows also imposed strict time limitations for critical lifting and installation phases.

Additionally, the new system needed to deliver improved performance, automation, and safety while integrating seamlessly into an existing facility originally commissioned in the 1980s.

The Solution

WH Scott was appointed to remove the legacy cranes and design, supply, and install two fully automated 8-tonne waste handling cranes. Working closely with manufacturer Fayat, the team ensured the cranes and control systems met all operational and performance requirements.

Advanced technologies were incorporated, including on-crane control systems, Vahle conductor bars, and Siemens wireless communication systems, simplifying installation and reducing downtime. A new control room was established, enabling operators to monitor and control crane operations via 50” displays with live 4K video feeds from 10 cameras, including thermal imaging for fire detection.

Installation was carefully phased to minimize disruption, including a two-week shutdown for temporary roof installation and a critical 21-day shutdown to remove old cranes and install new ones. The cranes were fully operational within this period and transitioned to automatic mode within two additional weeks.

The Outcome

Key Results:

  • Installation of 2 fully automated 8t waste handling cranes replacing obsolete systems
  • 20% increase in waste handling throughput after first week of full automation
  • Successful delivery within tight shutdown windows, including full installation in 21 days

Additional Notes:

WH Scott provides ongoing aftercare, including operator training, servicing, statutory inspections, and 24/7 breakdown support during the two-year warranty period.

“We are delighted with WH Scott’s solution, resulting in two advanced cranes at Victoria Road. The project ran smoothly due to a good working relationship between all parties, and the installation was completed in an effective and timely manner, despite challenging timescales. This installation is already making a positive impact and marks a significant leap forward in waste management technology at the site, enhancing efficiency and safety for years to come.”
