Crane Maintenance Support at Devonport Royal Dockyard

Delivering 24/7 crane maintenance to support critical naval operations at one of Europe’s largest dockyards.

Project Snapshot

Client: Babcock International – Devonport Royal Dockyard

Location: Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth, UK

Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge

Babcock International operates within a highly demanding and safety-critical environment at Devonport Royal Dockyard, one of the largest naval support facilities in Western Europe. The site supports a wide range of naval assets, including submarines, surface ships, and visiting international vessels, all of which rely on dependable lifting infrastructure.

Maintaining operational continuity across such a complex site presents significant challenges. Crane systems must remain fully functional to support ongoing maintenance, training, and deployment activities. Any downtime or failure could disrupt critical defence operations. Additionally, the presence of both nuclear and non-nuclear facilities requires strict adherence to safety, compliance, and operational standards.

The Solution

WH Scott & Son was appointed to manage the maintenance of all non-nuclear cranes across the Devonport Royal Dockyard. To ensure rapid response and continuous support, WH Scott established a dedicated on-site facility staffed by experienced personnel.

The team provides 24/7 callout support, enabling immediate response to maintenance issues and minimising operational disruption. In addition to non-nuclear crane maintenance, WH Scott also supports crane systems within the nuclear facility, ensuring consistent standards across the entire site. Their scope further includes involvement in major modification and maintenance programmes, helping to extend equipment lifespan and maintain compliance with rigorous industry and defence standards.

The Outcome

Key Results:

  • Continuous 24/7 crane maintenance support across a major naval dockyard
  • Improved operational reliability for critical lifting equipment
  • On-site presence enabling rapid response and reduced downtime

Additional Notes:

WH Scott’s embedded, on-site support model ensures seamless integration with ongoing dockyard operations, supporting both routine maintenance and large-scale engineering programmes.
