The Challenge
Viking Splash Tours operates a fleet of amphibious WW2 DUKW vehicles that require regular maintenance, including the removal and installation of heavy components such as engines and gearboxes. These maintenance activities were carried out in a warehouse with limited ceiling height, creating significant constraints for traditional lifting equipment.
Conventional solutions such as overhead gantry cranes were not feasible due to height restrictions, while swing jib cranes would have provided insufficient coverage across the workspace. This limited the ability to safely and efficiently move heavy components within the workshop.
The client required a flexible lifting solution that could operate within a confined space while still providing adequate lifting capacity and reach across multiple work areas.
The Solution
WH Scott designed and supplied a mobile A frame lifting system tailored to the constraints of the workshop environment. Unlike fixed installations, the mobile A frame could be easily repositioned, allowing operators to access different areas of the workspace without obstruction.
The system was equipped with a 2000 kg electric chain hoist mounted on the main beam, operated via pendant control for precise and user-friendly operation. To further enhance lifting accuracy, a compact spreader beam with dual drop chains was included, enabling stable and controlled handling of engines and gearboxes.
This configuration provided a practical and efficient alternative to fixed lifting systems, delivering both mobility and lifting capability within a restricted-height environment.
