WH SCOTT
Overhead Crane Installation at Bristol Port
Delivering high-capacity gantry crane systems to support efficient port operations and heavy lifting requirements.
Project Snapshot
Client: The Bristol Port Company
Location: Bristol Port, UK
Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge
The Bristol Port Company required a complete lifting solution for a newly constructed facility, designed to handle a wide range of operational demands. The project called for multiple high-capacity cranes capable of safely and efficiently lifting heavy components within a large-span building environment.
The scale and complexity of the installation introduced several technical challenges. These included designing crane systems to operate across a 160m gantry, ensuring precise load control, and managing the safe installation of large and heavy crane structures within and above the building. Additionally, the solution needed to meet strict safety standards while minimizing disruption during construction and installation phases.
The Solution
WH Scott delivered a full turnkey solution, covering the design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of four overhead double girder gantry cranes. The system included two 7.5-tonne cranes and two 35-tonne cranes, all with a 30m span and 12m height of lift, making them the largest and heaviest cranes delivered by WH Scott to date.
Advanced crane technology was integrated throughout, including inverter-controlled hoisting and travel for smooth operation, as well as sway control systems to improve load stability and positioning accuracy. Operator safety and usability were enhanced with radio remote control systems, overload warning features, and improved lighting beneath each crane.
WH Scott also designed and installed the full crane rail system along the 160m gantry, including 320m of rail installation and precise alignment to BS ISO 12488-1:2012 standards. The installation process involved complex lifting operations using both 70-tonne and 350-tonne mobile cranes, with large crane components installed in staged lifts over a two-day period. Additional safety infrastructure, including a 160m horizontal lifeline and ladder access systems, was installed to support ongoing inspection and maintenance activities.
The Outcome
Key Results:
- Installation and commissioning of four gantry cranes (7.5t and 35t capacity) across a 160m span
- Enhanced lifting precision and safety through sway control and inverter-driven systems
- Full compliance with BS ISO 12488-1:2012 rail alignment standards
Additional Notes:
Following successful load testing and handover, WH Scott continues to support the client with after-sales services, including operator training, servicing, statutory inspections, and 24/7 breakdown cover during the two-year warranty period.
“WH Scott was selected due to their ability to deliver a complete package and high-quality cranes.
