WH SCOTT
Harrot Hill Pumping Station Crane Installation
Design and installation of a 5-tonne overhead crane to support critical water infrastructure operations and maintenance.
Project Snapshot
Client: Ward & Burke
Location: West Cumbria, UK
Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge
As part of a major infrastructure programme led by United Utilities, Ward & Burke were tasked with delivering key elements of a new water supply system linking West Cumbria to Thirlmere Reservoir. The scheme included extensive pipeline installation, new treatment facilities, pumping stations, and underground reservoirs.
At the Harrot Hill pumping station, there was a requirement for a reliable lifting solution to safely handle pumps and auxiliary equipment during both installation and ongoing maintenance. The equipment involved is critical to operational performance, requiring precise handling in a confined and technically demanding environment.
The challenge was to deliver a lifting system that could integrate seamlessly into the pumping station, meet strict safety and operational standards, and support long-term maintenance requirements.
The Solution
WH Scott worked collaboratively with Ward & Burke and other project stakeholders to design a tailored lifting solution for the site. A 5-tonne overhead travelling crane was specified to meet the load requirements and provide efficient handling of pumps and associated equipment.
The crane was manufactured to specifications and installed on site, ensuring full compatibility with the structural and operational constraints of the pumping station. The system was designed to support both immediate installation needs and future maintenance activities, enhancing long-term usability.
Following installation, the crane underwent full load testing and commissioning to verify performance, safety, and compliance with required standards before being handed over for operational use.
The Outcome
Key Results:
- Installation of a 5-tonne overhead crane to support pump and equipment handling
- Improved safety and efficiency in installation and ongoing maintenance operations
- Fully tested and commissioned system meeting required operational standards
Additional Notes:
The crane provides a long-term lifting solution, supporting the continued operation and maintenance of critical water infrastructure within the wider Thirlmere supply scheme.
