WH SCOTT
Watergate Theatre Flying System Installation
Custom-designed flying system enabling safe and dynamic onstage lifting for theatrical performances.
Project Snapshot
Client: Watergate Theatre
Location: Kilkenny, Ireland
Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge
Watergate Theatre required a safe and reliable solution to enable actors to be lifted and suspended during live performances, specifically for their production of Peter Pan. The system needed to deliver smooth, controlled movement while ensuring the highest levels of safety for performers on stage.
As a working theatre with a diverse programme of productions, the solution also needed to be adaptable and suitable for ongoing use beyond a single show. This required a robust and versatile system that could integrate seamlessly into the venue’s existing infrastructure.
The project demanded careful design and engineering to balance performance, safety, and usability within the constraints of a live theatre environment.
The Solution
WH Scott collaborated closely with the Watergate Theatre team to design a bespoke flying system tailored to the venue’s requirements. Using its in-house design and fabrication capabilities through WH Scott, the team developed a pilewind winch system complete with control mechanisms and supporting infrastructure.
The pilewind winch system was selected for its versatility and suitability for theatrical environments, providing a reliable electric hoisting solution for suspension and lifting applications. All necessary fabrication and installation works were completed on site to ensure seamless integration with the stage setup.
Following installation, the system was fully load tested and commissioned to verify safe operation. WH Scott also delivered operator training to theatre staff, ensuring they could confidently and safely use the system for future productions.
The Outcome
Key Results:
- Successful design and installation of a bespoke theatre flying system
- Safe lifting capability enabling dynamic stage performances
- Project completed on time and within budget
Additional Notes:
The system has become a valuable long-term asset for the theatre, supporting a wide range of productions beyond the initial Peter Pan performance.
