Irish Rail Train Lifting Jack Installation

Custom-designed train lifting system to enhance maintenance efficiency and safety across a major EMU fleet.

Project Snapshot

Client: Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail)

Location: Fairview Depot, Ireland

Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge

Irish Rail required a reliable and efficient lifting solution to support maintenance operations at its Fairview depot. The system needed to safely lift both train bodies and bogies across multiple classes of electric multiple unit (EMU) rolling stock, enabling essential underframe maintenance and component replacement.

The scale and diversity of the fleet—approximately 150 cars across multiple EMU classes from different manufacturers—introduced complexity in ensuring compatibility and consistent performance. The solution also needed to integrate seamlessly into existing maintenance workflows while meeting stringent safety and operational standards.

Given WH Scott’s long-standing relationship with Irish Rail, including over a decade of statutory inspections and crane upgrades, there was a clear expectation for a high-performance, compliant, and future-proof system.

The Solution

WH Scott collaborated closely with Windhoff, a specialist German manufacturer of railway and heavy industrial equipment, to design and deliver a bespoke train lifting jack system tailored to Irish Rail’s requirements.

The solution included the design, manufacture, and supply of eight lifting jacks, complete with all necessary accessories. WH Scott engineers participated in factory acceptance testing in Germany to ensure quality and performance prior to delivery.

On-site in Ireland, WH Scott managed the full installation and commissioning process, including both mechanical and electrical integration. The system was specifically engineered to lift EMU vehicles via lifting arm pockets, enabling efficient removal and replacement of bogies and underframe components.

The Outcome

Key Results:

  • Installation of 8 bespoke train lifting jacks supporting a fleet of approximately 150 EMU cars
  • Improved maintenance efficiency, reducing resource requirements and operational costs
  • Project delivered on time with a 100% safety record

Additional Notes:

The lifting system is currently in operation at the Fairview depot, providing ongoing support for Irish Rail’s maintenance programme and enhancing overall safety performance.
