Lifting Equipment & Crane Systems for Manufacturing
Overhead cranes, jib cranes and bespoke handling equipment built around your production line — with servicing, statutory inspection and certification from 14 depots across the UK and Ireland.
Lifting That Keeps Production Moving
Manufacturing lifting equipment has to do two things at once: move loads fast enough to keep a line running, and do it with the accuracy and control modern production standards demand. Whether the load is a multi-tonne steel fabrication, a tooling change on a press or a delicate composite panel, the wrong lifting method creates bottlenecks, damage and risk.
WH Scott Group designs, supplies, installs and maintains crane systems and lifting equipment for manufacturers across the UK and Ireland. We have been engineering lifting solutions since 1897, and with 14 depots the team that installs your crane is the team that services and examines it — so specification, maintenance and statutory compliance stay joined up instead of split between suppliers.

The Lifting Challenges Manufacturers Face
Few production environments lift the same load twice. Component variation, restricted headroom, fixed machine layouts and continuous duty cycles all push standard lifting equipment past what it was specified for. The recurring pressure points are:
- Load variability — precision parts and large, awkward assemblies handled by the same crane, often needing purpose-designed lifting beams or vacuum handling.
- Duty and wear — intensive daily use accelerates fatigue in hoists, ropes and end carriages, and a crane failure stops the line, not just one machine.
- Controlled and hazardous areas — cleanrooms, coating bays and zoned atmospheres limit what can be installed and how it must be built.
- Compliance and traceability — inspection dates, certificates and asset records spread across hundreds of items of equipment, often over more than one site.

How WH Scott Group Supports Manufacturers
Crane systems and handling equipment
We specify and install overhead gantry cranes, jib cranes and process cranes to suit bay dimensions, duty and load profile, alongside lifting beams, mobile A-frame gantries and vacuum lifting beams where handling has to be flexible or damage-free. Cranes are designed and fabricated in-house under our BS EN 1090 certification, with cleanroom and explosion-proof configurations available for controlled or zoned areas.
Maintenance, repair and modernisation
Preventative crane maintenance plans keep equipment available under continuous duty, backed by rapid breakdown support, hoist overhaul and crane modernisation for ageing assets. We service cranes and hoists from any manufacturer, not only the ones we supply.
Inspection, certification and reporting
Thorough examination, load testing and certification are carried out by our own employed engineers, with certificates issued on site and asset records available through the customer portal — so the audit evidence for every crane, hoist and lifting accessory sits in one place.

Lifting Equipment Compliance in the UK and Ireland
In Great Britain and Northern Ireland, factory lifting equipment is governed by LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998. Cranes and hoists used to lift loads require thorough examination at least every 12 months, lifting accessories at least every 6 months, and anything used to lift people at least every 6 months — or in line with a written scheme of examination drawn up by a competent person.
In the Republic of Ireland the equivalent duties sit in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007), enforced by the Health and Safety Authority, with Schedule 1 setting the intervals directly: 12 months for cranes and other lifting machines used for materials, and 6 months for lifting accessories including chains, ropes, hooks, shackles, spreader beams and vacuum lifting devices. Design and construction standards are shared across both markets — BS EN / I.S. EN 15011 for bridge and gantry cranes, EN 13155 for non-fixed load lifting attachments — while lifting in a potentially explosive atmosphere also brings in DSEAR in the UK and Part 8 of S.I. No. 299 of 2007 in Ireland. WH Scott Group covers all three jurisdictions through examination, certification and digital reporting as a LEEA member.
