Lifting Solutions for the Pharmaceutical Industry
Cleanroom cranes, ATEX-rated hoists and statutory inspection for GMP production, laboratory and process areas across the UK and Ireland.
Lifting Inside a Controlled Pharmaceutical Environment
Pharmaceutical production puts lifting equipment inside the product’s own environment. A crane over a filling line, a hoist above a reactor or a jib in a weighing booth sits within classified space, so it has to move loads reliably without shedding particles, harbouring residue or failing an audit.
WH Scott Group designs, supplies, installs and inspects lifting equipment for pharmaceutical manufacturers, CDMOs, laboratories and medical device facilities across the UK and Ireland. Typical work covers cleanroom and washdown areas, solvent-handling and powder-processing zones, and the plant rooms and warehouses that support them — from a single 250 kg jib crane to a fully engineered process crane installation.

Why Standard Lifting Equipment Fails in a Cleanroom
Painted carbon steel, open gearboxes, festoon cable and oil-lubricated chain all generate particles, trap residue and corrode under routine sanitisation. Standard equipment is also rarely specified for the sporicides, IPA and vapour-phase hydrogen peroxide used in GMP cleaning regimes.
That changes the specification on several fronts:
- Materials and finish — stainless steel or plated components, smooth crevice-free surfaces and sealed bearings that can be wiped down
- Particle control — enclosed gearboxes, low-emission motors, covered conductor systems and lifting media chosen to limit debris
- Headroom — low-headroom and underslung arrangements that maximise hook height beneath ducting and ceiling voids
- Hazardous areas — solvent and powder zones need equipment certified for the correct ATEX zone, gas or dust group and temperature class
One point worth being clear about: ISO 14644-1 classifies rooms, not machines. Equipment is specified and particle-tested for use in an ISO Class 5, 7 or 8 environment — the classification itself belongs to the room.

What WH Scott Group Provides
Equipment. Cleanroom cranes in freestanding or ceiling-suspended arrangements, monorails and jib cranes for laboratory and filling-room duties, explosion proof (EX) hoists and ATEX radio remote controls for hazardous zones, and bespoke lifting beams and frames and vacuum lifters for drums, IBCs, sacks, vessel lids and agitators.
Engineering. In-house design, fabrication and installation, including retrofits into live, validated facilities where ceiling penetrations, panel loadings and batch schedules all constrain the work. Existing cranes can often be refurbished or modernised rather than replaced.
Inspection and maintenance. Statutory thorough examination, load testing and planned preventative maintenance, with digital certification and reporting so records are available on demand during an inspection.
Our engineers work from 14 depots across the UK and Ireland. WH Scott Group is a LEEA member and operates certified ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 27001 management systems.

Inspection and Servicing Within Controlled Environments
Getting a thorough examination done inside a classified area is usually the harder half of the job. Our engineers work to site gowning and permit-to-work procedures, use cleanroom-compatible tooling and access equipment, and plan load testing around what can realistically be brought into and out of a classified space.
Work is scheduled around shutdown windows, changeover periods or out-of-hours slots so production is not disrupted, and findings are issued as digital reports with clear remedial actions and re-examination dates. For more information, contact us.
