Lifting Solutions and Crane Systems for Power & Energy Sites
Turbine hall cranes, ATEX-rated lifting equipment, LOLER and S.I. 299 examinations for power generation and energy sites across the UK and Ireland.
What We Do for Power & Energy Operators
WH Scott designs, installs, examines and maintains lifting equipment across power generation and energy infrastructure — from turbine hall gantry cranes and boiler house hoists to substation lifting frames and ATEX-rated equipment for gas and hydrogen environments.
We work for generators, transmission and distribution operators, EPC contractors and O&M providers. The problem is rarely just load and span: it is the fixed outage window, the permit-to-work regime, the access route into a condenser bay, and an asset that cannot come offline twice to correct a specification error.
Design, fabrication, equipment supply, statutory examination and lifecycle maintenance sit within one group, so specification, certification and compliance stay under a single accountable contract. We also support renewable energy, energy from waste and recycling and utilities sites.

The Constraints That Shape Power Sector Lifting
Generation and transmission sites impose constraints that standard lifting equipment is not specified for:
- Outage-driven programmes. Turbine, generator and transformer lifts have to be completed, load tested and certified inside a planned shutdown, with handback dates that do not move.
- Classified areas. Gas, hydrogen, biomass and energy-from-waste plant can create potentially explosive atmospheres. Equipment has to be selected and certified for the zone, not adapted for it afterwards.
- Harsh service conditions. Heat, dust, vibration and corrosive or coastal exposure accelerate wear, which often means a shorter examination interval than the statutory minimum.
- Restricted access and precise positioning. Lifts in condenser bays, boiler houses and switch rooms frequently need bespoke beams or frames and radio remote control to keep operators clear of the load.
On a generating asset the paperwork carries the same weight as the hardware: an out-of-date report of thorough examination can stop a lift, and stopping a lift inside an outage stops the outage.

Engineered Systems, Then Lifecycle Support
We design and build overhead gantry cranes from 100 kg to 250 t, single and double girder, with EN 1090 certified structural steelwork from our own fabrication shops and SWF Krantechnik components. Where the process or duty cycle demands it we engineer process cranes and custom lifting beams and frames for balanced multi-point lifts. For classified areas we supply explosion-proof lifting equipment rated for zones 1/21 and 2/22.
After installation the same group keeps it compliant: preventative crane maintenance and breakdown response, proof load testing, thorough examination and certification, and crane modernisation — new controls, drives and anti-collision systems that extend the life of an existing runway rather than replacing it. Reports are issued digitally through our CoreRFID portal, so current certification is available to site teams and auditors at any time.

Lifting Equipment Compliance — UK and Ireland
In the UK, lifting equipment is governed by LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998. Thorough examination is required at least every 12 months for lifting equipment, and every six months for lifting accessories and anything used to lift people — or at the intervals set by a competent person in an examination scheme. HSE guidance is clear that harsh service conditions or severe consequences of failure can justify shorter intervals, which is why schemes rather than default dates are the norm on generating assets. Where a classified area exists, DSEAR 2002 and the UK ATEX equipment regulations apply alongside.
In the Republic of Ireland the equivalent duties sit in Regulations 30 and 52 and Schedule 1 of S.I. No. 299 of 2007, with the report of thorough examination normally recorded on HSA form GA1. Intervals are broadly comparable, but Schedule 1 singles out power sites: equipment in premises used primarily for generating, transforming, switching or otherwise regulating electrical energy is examined under a scheme of inspection and testing drawn up by a competent person rather than to a fixed interval. Part 8 of the same regulations covers explosive atmospheres and requires an explosion protection document. We deliver lifting equipment inspection in Ireland to S.I. 299 from our Irish depots.
