Automotive Gantry Cranes for Mobile Heavy Lifting
Wheel-mounted gantry cranes that lift and travel to where the work is — across yards, hardstanding and open production areas, with no fixed runway to install or maintain. Capacities from 20 to 600 tonnes.
What Is an Automotive Gantry Crane?
An automotive gantry crane is a wheel-mounted portal crane with its own travel drive. Rather than running along a fixed rail or runway, it lifts the load beneath its frame and then drives it to where it is needed, steering around obstacles and working anywhere on suitable ground.
That makes it the practical choice where a rail-mounted overhead or goliath crane cannot be justified: outdoor storage yards, laydown and hardstanding areas, large open production bays, and sites where the lifting area changes as the work changes. There is no runway structure to design, no foundation to pour and no gantry beam to maintain, and the crane can be redeployed when the layout moves.
WH Scott supplies automotive gantry cranes from 20 to 600 tonnes, either as standard units or engineered around a specific load, span and duty.

Where Automotive Gantry Cranes Are Used
Automotive gantries are used wherever heavy or oversized items have to be moved across open ground. Typical applications include outdoor storage and logistics yards, manufacturing and fabrication plants moving assemblies between workstations, precast concrete works, boiler and vessel fabrication, shipbuilding and marine engineering, and power and renewable energy sites handling turbine, generator and transformer components.
Compliance for Automotive Gantry Cranes in the UK and Ireland
In Great Britain an automotive gantry crane in service is lifting equipment under LOLER 1998. It must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at least every 12 months, and any lifting accessories used with it at least every 6 months, unless a written scheme of examination drawn up by a competent person sets different intervals (HSE guidance on thorough examination). Northern Ireland applies the equivalent 1999 regulations.
In Ireland the same equipment falls under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, S.I. No. 299 of 2007. Schedule 1 requires a crane to be thoroughly examined at least every 12 months and lifting accessories at least every 6 months, with the result recorded on Health and Safety Authority Form GA1. New equipment should arrive with its declaration of conformity and, where applicable, be designed to BS EN 15011 / I.S. EN 15011, the European standard for bridge and gantry cranes, which covers gantry cranes travelling on roadway surfaces. WH Scott can carry out the statutory thorough examination as well as supplying the crane — see our inspection services.
