WH Scott
Bridge Gantry Inspection & Maintenance Services UK
Comprehensive inspection, testing, and maintenance of critical bridge gantry systems to ensure safety and reliability.
Project Snapshot
Client: Tamar Bridge
Location: Cornwall & Devon, UK
Provider: WH Scott
The Challenge
The Tamar Bridge is a vital transport link carrying over 40,000 vehicles daily, requiring continuous monitoring and maintenance to ensure safe and uninterrupted operation. The bridge incorporates multiple maintenance gantries and tower hoists, all of which must remain fully operational to support inspection and upkeep activities.
Given the age of the infrastructure—dating back to the 1960s—and the installation of gantries in 1998 and 2001, regular statutory inspections and ongoing maintenance were essential to ensure compliance and structural integrity. Any failure or downtime could significantly impact maintenance operations and potentially disrupt traffic flow.
The challenge was to implement a structured and reliable maintenance programme while working within a live infrastructure environment, maintaining strict safety standards, and minimizing disruption to bridge operations.
The Solution
WH Scott was awarded the contract to deliver a comprehensive inspection and maintenance programme for the Tamar Bridge. A trimonthly service schedule was established, supported by a dedicated Southwest engineering team available for both planned maintenance and reactive support.
To enhance efficiency and reporting, WH Scott developed a bespoke digital application that enables engineers to complete detailed inspection checklists via mobile devices. This system provides the client with instant access to maintenance and examination reports, improving transparency, and decision-making.
In addition to routine inspections, the team carries out non-destructive testing on key structural components to identify potential issues before they escalate. Acting as Principal Contractor, WH Scott manages all health and safety requirements throughout maintenance activities, ensuring full compliance with industry standards.
The Outcome
Key Results:
- Implementation of a structured trimonthly inspection and maintenance programme
- Enhanced reporting and asset management through a bespoke digital inspection app
- Maintained a 100% safety record with no accidents or lost time incidents
Additional Notes:
The maintenance programme ensures the continued safe operation of critical gantry systems, supporting the long-term reliability of one of the UK’s key transport links.
