Sulzer Pump Solutions Ireland
Design, fabrication, and installation of stainless-steel test tanks for submersible pump testing.
Project Snapshot
Client: Sulzer Pump Solutions Ireland
Location: Wexford, Ireland
Provider: WH Scott

The Challenge
Sulzer required a robust and reliable solution to support the testing of submersible wastewater pumps at its Wexford facility. These pumps undergo rigorous quality control procedures, including full submersion testing, making the integrity and durability of the test tanks critical to operations.
The existing infrastructure needed to be replaced with new tanks capable of withstanding water pressure without deformation or leakage. The tanks also had to integrate seamlessly with internal and external pipework systems, including flow meters, manifolds, and actuator valves.
In addition, installation presented logistical challenges, as the tanks needed to be positioned within a confined concrete pit below ground level, requiring careful handling and precise placement.
The Solution
WH Scott designed and fabricated two stainless steel test tanks using precision-cut 3m x 1.5m sheets, forming structures measuring 2m x 1.5m. All joints were welded on both sides to ensure complete water tightness, while external reinforcement using 80mm angle iron prevented deformation under load.
Internal channel supports and pipework were fully integrated into the tank design, with flanged pipe sections welded and aligned to ensure secure connections. Heavy-duty lids were fabricated and bolted into place, providing safe and accessible tank closures.
Once delivered to site, the tanks were installed into a one-metre-deep concrete pit using mobile A-frames and electric hoists. WH Scott completed the full mechanical installation, including internal and external pipework, manifolds, flow meters, and actuator valves. Existing guide rails and clamping systems were also transferred and fitted to the new tanks.
The Outcome
Key Results:
- Fabrication and installation of 2 stainless steel test tanks for pump testing
- Leak-proof performance verified through high-pressure air testing
- Improved reliability and durability of pump testing infrastructure
Additional Notes:
All pipework systems were pressure tested using high-pressure air to ensure complete system integrity, supporting Sulzer’s stringent quality control standards.
