WH SCOTT
Lifting Equipment Supply Across the UK and Ireland
Compliant lifting equipment from multiple manufacturers, backed by in-house design, long-term hire, spares and expert selection advice — from 14 depots across the UK and Ireland.
Lifting Equipment Supplied to Suit the Lift
Choosing lifting equipment is rarely a matter of picking a product from a catalogue. The load, the lifting method, the working environment and the applicable regulations all shape what will be safe, practical and compliant in service.
WH Scott has supplied lifting equipment since 1897. Because we are not tied to a single manufacturer, we specify what suits the application rather than what suits a brand — and we support the equipment for its whole working life through consultancy, bespoke design and manufacture, long-term hire, spares and accessories. Everything we supply carries the appropriate UKCA or CE marking for the market it is used in.

What We Supply
- Loose tackle and slings — chain slings, roundslings, flat and endless webbing slings, shackles, eyebolts and hooks
- Below-the-hook equipment — lifting and spreader beams, spreader frames, C-hooks, beam and plate clamps, container lugs, automatic safety hooks and load cells
- Manual lifting equipment — chain blocks, lever hoists, push and geared trolleys, tirfors, winches, screw jacks, and hydraulic pumps and cylinders
- Handling, access and site equipment — steel and aluminium mobile gantries, A-frame gantries, roll and reel handling devices, pallet trucks, wheel skates, scissor tables, forklift and barrel attachments, load restraints, man baskets and crane emergency baskets
Where nothing standard fits the load or the lifting point arrangement, we design, manufacture and test bespoke lifting equipment in house.
Getting the Specification Right
A handful of decisions drive most lifting equipment purchases, and settling them at enquiry stage avoids expensive changes later:
- Load and configuration — the required working load limit, number of lifting points, sling angles and the position of the centre of gravity
- Environment — indoor or outdoor use, available headroom and travel, temperature, corrosion risk and any hazardous area classification
- Mobility — whether the equipment needs to be fixed, mobile within a building, or transportable between sites
- Whole-life cost — outright purchase or long-term hire, plus the availability of spares, accessories and ongoing thorough examination
Tell us the load, the environment and the compliance requirement and our team will specify suitable equipment. Where the lift is more involved, our lifting consultation service can assess the application on site first.

Lifting Equipment Compliance in the UK and Ireland
In Great Britain, lifting equipment and lifting accessories fall under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) alongside PUWER 1998. Once in service, lifting accessories and equipment used to lift people must be thoroughly examined at least every six months, and other lifting equipment at least every 12 months, unless an examination scheme drawn up by a competent person sets different intervals.
In Ireland the equivalent duties sit in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007). Regulation 52 and Schedule 1 set periodic thorough examination intervals by equipment type rather than by a single rule — six months for lifting accessories such as chains, slings, shackles, hooks and spreader beams, and 12 months for items including cranes, winches and equipment provided to support lifting equipment. Our LEEA-member engineers carry out LOLER thorough examination and certification in Great Britain and S.I. 299 lifting equipment inspection in Ireland, so equipment bought from us can stay in certification from day one.
